Tanlines

another KEXP discovery. a little bit stranger than the norm.

Timber Timbre

loved this band for a while now, like always, thanks to KEXP. another Bon Iver esque one, but they sometimes branch a bit in the Animal Collective direction

The Low Anthem

kudos to wyatt for finding this group. if he had just waited a few days i woulda discovered it on my own via a Skins episode, haha. anyway, Bon Iver / Phosphorescent esque....maybe those combined, and better...your call.

Sirius

Sirius is a rap artist from Norway who sounds kindof like Eminem (at least in this video), although less obscene. i found him randomly years ago, and still like him, so here you go:

Malajube

i've been going through my old old old youtube favorites to dig up songs i discovered long ago. here is one i believe Miranda suggested to me:

25 February 2010

Gotye

what the heck is this? i dont know what this is exactly, but i like it. it's called 'Thanks for Your Time' and its pretty chill, cool video too. thanks YouTube, for the very random find. (EDIT): i checked them out a bit more, and have added a second fabulous song and video.

20 February 2010

Sakanaction

so, tristan linked this to me calling it "japanese Passion Pit." for the most part, i agree, but it's still its own thing. the music video is worth watching too

19 February 2010

Pufferfish

sortof; acoustic folky country. theres not a whole lot out there available for me to show you guys, but heres a pretty good recording of Wrecking Ball that i found (there's an album version of this song and one other on Grooveshark.com if you're curious)

18 February 2010

Little Boots

while in London and Paris this past summer, my sister and i spent a lot of our time in the hotel watching various music channels. this is one i saw/heard and liked, a lot. techno-y pop UK i dunno goodness! (& i threw in a second song of hers too)

13 February 2010

Massive Attack

the band that brought you the House title sequence is producing more greatness. here is an example:

10 February 2010

Brother Ali

as much as i want this blog to be true to it's name and eclectic as fuck, sometimes i just listen to one type of music for a while. Brother Ali is similar to Sage Francis, but only in genre and awesomeness. he has his own sound and epicness. here you go, this song always makes me dance:

Sage Francis

only the first of these two songs have music videos but both are excellent. i hear Sage Francis on KEXP all the time but i've never taken the time (til now!) to go look up his music and take time listening to it. he's one of my favorite rap/hiphop/whatever you wanna call it artists.

05 February 2010

Justice

D.A.N.C.E., another one of those old summer work discoveries (thanks Tim), dance-y, techno-y, heavy bass, and all that jazz. also, a really awesome music video. so check it outtt

Scroobius Pip

(and Dan Le Sac) iii love this man and his crazy beard and his chaotic-yet-simple music videos, and his heavy bassline and clever wordings. and because i love this man, i know that you all will love him too, or you already do. so here's two songs by the fantastic mr Pip.

i also strongly recommend Astronaut by YILA feat. Scroobius Pip

04 February 2010

Vampire Weekend

everybody loves Vampire Weekend. i listened to their debut album so many times i got sick of it and took an approximate 1 year hiatus from being a big fan of them. but with their new music, i've fallen in love with their sound again. just as pop-y and electronic and amazing, but the final products are a little more groomed. so here's two songs of their fantastic January release: Cousins (with music video, yayy) and Horchata (no music video, booo)

Charlotte Gainsbourg

once again, a KEXP find. (maybe i'll stop announcing that fact eventually). IRM is a song inspired by the sound and effect of an MRI (see, it's MRI backwards...cleverr). anyway it reminds me a bit of Santogold but less abrasive to the senses.

03 February 2010

Streetlight Manifesto

BAM sudden genre shift! here's some ska for ya'll. this band reminds me a lot of two summers ago, when i spent my summer working at Veritox, under my mom's watchful eye so i couldn't get away with weed and obviously cocaine or whatever weed leads to. i spent days upon days working in the warehouse with Tim, blasting ska out the open garage door thing. it also reminds me of the summer, when i rekindled my love for this band by listening to it full blast whenever i'd clean my newly acquired car. anyway basically, it's excellent.

Regina Spektor

this is a similar note to my last post, in terms of genre. Regina Spektor is not a new discovery for me but this is a more recent song i've really enjoyed -- Eet. also, an oldy but fantastic-y, Fidelity.

Ingrid Michaelson

i just really like this song. it makes me happy.

Metric

yayayay Metric. and yay live KEXP sessions. i keep hearing this song on the radio and heard it again today. soo, here's an excellent acoustic version of Gold Guns Girls, along with Sick Muse.

02 February 2010

Phosphorescent

this song (Wolves) is on the live at KEXP album 5 that i bought a couple months ago, in fact it was one of the reasons i bought it. wyatt had me listen to it some time ago annnd i adore it to deathh. it's the kind of music like Damien Rice, or Bon Iver...the kind that's calm but strong, and touches upon your soul at every opportunity it can. so listen.

Passion Pit

loove this band. first heard this song in London in some random television ad. i was so sad because it had no recognizable lyrics so there was no way i'd ever know what song it was. then, a couple months afterwards, back in WA, they played this song on KEXP. me and my sister rejoiced.

Rang De Basanti

on a similar note as the last post, here's another Indian song that i'm also sure you've never heard of. it's a track from a movie by the same name (a great and fantastic movie that ALL OF YOU should go out of your way to watch [secret: it's on youtube in parts..]).

actually, im going to give you two songs. the first is my favorite, it starts with like a minute long song-prayer because the other videos with just the main song are embedding-disabled (i happen to like the song-prayer too). the second is another i really enjoyed. now go listen, and then go watch the movie (and i rarely pitch movies, so you can be sure it's worth your time).

oh, and i suggest turning your bass up a bit. it makes them both better.

Manooghi Hi

i can promise you you have never heard of this band or this song. it's a local Seattle band that i will vaguely describe as 'Hindi rock', if that makes any sense to you. maybe Hindi alternative instead. i have a mild obsession with Indian and Indian-inspired or Indian-sounding music, so this hit good chords in me. give it a chance:

Eminem

alright, i've been a fan of Eminem since elementary school, since before i knew who he was, since before i knew what he looked like (i even got mixed up for a while and believed that Let's Get Retarded by the Black Eyed Peas was one of his songs), since before i even really listened to music at all (the next step in my musical discoveries was Britney Spears). regardless of my musically-inept childhood failures, i still enjoyed the bizarre and obscene songs he put out, and this one remains one of my favorites to this day:

01 February 2010

The Asteroids Galaxy Tour

i actually first heard this in an American Eagle store (don't let that scare you away...), the video reminds me of MGMT, and the genre reminds me of something, but i'm not quite sure. here's the song i first heard, and another good one (altho it lacks a video). judge for yourself:

31 January 2010

Animal Collective

two songs/videos for your enjoyment: Summertime Clothes and Brothersport. i must admit, the first video freaks me out a little...

Psapp

i love love love love this band. they're kindof...low-key crazy? the first song i ever heard by them was Hi off the album The Only Thing I Ever Wanted, and Calm Down (no music video) is, i think, my favorite song off their other album Tiger, My Friend, which i like even more.

Local H

heard this song in the little excellent indie movie Love, Blood, Kryptonite, and fell in love with it. sorry, no video, just a lame still of some poster. ignore that and just listen to the song.

Hot IQs

Firecracker: sir rob miller showed me this song some years ago. sadly, the Hot IQs have since disbanded..anyway, they're sortof Franz Ferdinand esque, & here you go:

Jape

i stumbled upon this song/video Floating several years ago, i dont remember how now. recently i thought of it again, and fell in love just as much as the first time.

Siouxsie and the Banshees

another KEXP find from i suppose a couple months ago. i purchased a CD slightly after, but this is still my favorite song. probably due to its craziness:

30 January 2010

Beach House

Beach House reminds me a lot of Fleet Foxes, but with a female vocalist and maybe a little..softer? i'm not sure. anyway: Used to Be, by Beach House. (music video and a excellent acoustic/live version)

Lady Gaga

i don't care what you say -- i worship Lady Gaga. call her pop, mainstream, whatever, i think she's more akin to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs or Santogold than she is Britney (no offense miss Spears), and i absolutely love the song 'Teeth' but because there's no music video for that, here's another one i really like:

K'naan

heard Waving Flag on KEXP today. it was introduced as music from some guy who started out in some foreign country, blah blah blah. all i really caught was that it sounded like it would be some wo' pop, and i really didn't want any wo' pop at the time. it wasn't, and i was very pleasantly surprised. i'm still exploring the rest of his music, but here's the song i heard today (no music video, unfortunately..):

Florence + The Machine

i love Florence + the Machine. i hear them on kexp all the time and had yet to find some songs i really adored until a couple days ago. here's two excellent pieces:

Scatman John

i discovered this dude and this song a couple days ago, rather randomly. i could only think, 'why haven't i heard of this guy already??"

techno dance jazz craziness. love it.
